Hatsune Miku is a character's name and also a product name of a voice synthesis and desktop music (DTM) software that was released by Crypton Future Media on August 31st in 2007.
There are figures of Yuki-Miku and Sakura-Miku. Yuki-Miku is a supporting character for Fairy Sapporo Snow Festival.
The original reason why Hatsune Miku became a supporting character of Sapporo Snow festival is because the Headquarter of the Crypton Future Media is in Sapporo (means Miku's hometown is Sapporo as well) and a snow statue of Miku was built in the 61st Sapporo Snow festival.
Sakura-Miku is a Hatsune Miku with pink hair and clothes as if she is sakura in disguise.

This anime was produced by Kyoto Animation, which has a lot of passionate fans. It is said that this is the reason why it attracted so much attention before its broadcast and also why it became so popular.
In the Anime version, most of the scenes realistically described the characters' daily life, their simple gestures, the direction of eyes, and even the subtleties of their feelings.
Soon after the broadcast of the 1st series, the original comic books had been sold out online. Many of the smaller goods such as headphones or stationeries of the characters in the anime had gotten a lot of attention. Even the real musical instruments such as guitars or bass guitars became very popular.
Especially, the left-handed bass guitar from the brand used by Mio Akiyama ran out of stocks within a few weeks. An additional production order for approximately two years worth of its annual amount was made.
Its influence got the attention of the musical instrument industry who reached out to this anime. Some instrument shops or music schools made promotions expecting a big response with these instruments.
